SUMMARY:ASEV-EASTERN SECTION: NELSON J. SHAULIS SYMPOSIUM: DIGITAL VITICULTURE
DESCRIPTION:Date:  Tuesday July 16th – Thursday July 18th 2019 \nTime:  The agenda will be announced at a later date\, please check back for updates. \nVenue:  Hobart and William Smith Colleges\, 337 Pulteney Street\, Geneva\, NY\, 14456 \nDescription: A special field day and symposium entitled “Digital Viticulture: New Tools for Precision Management” will be featured as part of the annual American Society of Viticulture and Enology- Eastern Section conference at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva\, NY on July 16 through July 18. \nThe two-day program and field tour will bring together suppliers\, researchers\, and growers to explore the tools and concepts of precision viticulture.  New technologies\, such as inexpensive sensors\, digital imaging\, geographical information systems\, and precision machinery are converging to make precision viticulture possible.  This field tour and symposium will focus on tools\, concepts\, and platforms for putting it all together for managing vineyards. \n“Nelson Shaulis and others developed principles of vine physiology that form the basis of modern viticulture over the past 50 years”\, said Tim Martinson\, Senior extension associate with Cornell University. “Yet growers have lacked the tools to apply these principles on a vine by vine basis until now.  New precision ag technologies are finally making it possible to vary management within a vineyard to achieve management goals.” \nField demonstrations on Wednesday\, July 17 will include variable-rate shoot thinning\,  mechanical crop estimation\, yield monitors\, sensors for measuring soil and canopy characteristics\, UAV and tractor-mounted imaging systems\, and tools for canopy management. \nThe Shaulis Symposium on July 18 will focus on applying viticultural principles to address within-vineyard variability.  Four sessions will cover the three-step process of implementing precision management: Measure\, Model\, and Manage. \n\nSession 1: Physiology of vine balance and precision viticulture\nSession 2: Metrics for management: Sensors\, drones\, satellites\, and analytical equipment\nSession 3: Models for management: Distilling a flood of data to practical tools for deciding ‘what I need to do and where’.\nSession 4: Examples from around the world.\n\nThe ASEV-ES technical meeting\, featuring presentations on Enology and Viticulture from students and faculty of the Eastern Section\, will take place on Tuesday July 16. \nThe symposium will include lunch and reception. The event flyer can be found here. \nRegistration:  Options for each day are available.  Conference\, Vineyard Tour\, and Symposium information is available at www.asev-es.org.

Balancing the minerals in your soil can address many of the challenges to that farmers often face. Don’t miss this opening presentation\, which will serve as the foundation for a deeper dive into soil biology and health throughout the remainder of the program. \n2:45-3:45 p.m. | Improving Water\, Nitrogen\, and Phosphorus Efficiency\nJohn Kempf\, Advancing Eco Agriculture \nIn this workshop AEA’s John Kempf will describe soil nitrogen and phosphorus cycles\, how to manage these interactions\, prevent nutrient leaching\, and enable the greatest plant response with the most efficient use of inputs. It is possible to supply all of a crop’s nitrogen and phosphorus requirements through biologically available nutrients while contributing no fertilizer runoff\, and by better managing nitrogen. Water use efficiency can also increase dramatically. Attend this workshop to learn the principles and techniques for best water\, nitrogen\, and phosphorus management. \n3:45-4:30 p.m. — NETWORKING COFFEE BREAK – sponsored by MARRONE BIO INNOVATIONS\n \n4:30-5:15 p.m. | Exploring Soil’s Microbiome\nAdrian Ferrero\, Biome Makers \nCombining the latest technology as DNA Sequencing and intelligent computing allows us to monitor soil health by using microbiome as a bioindicator of soil life. This session will dive into what we know about soil microbial life\, explore what measuring these communities can tell us about our soil\, and how this information can help us better manage for productivity. \n5:15-6:30 p.m. | KEYNOTE: Driving Productivity and Resilience with Good Soil Health\nGary Zimmer\, Midwestern BioAg \nIn this non-stop\, jam-packed keynote presentation\, soil health veteran Gary Zimmer will walk us down a comprehensive journey into farm productivity. You’ll walk away from this dynamic session with diverse tools to drive productivity and resilience in your farming system. \n6:30-7:45 p.m. | EVENING RECEPTION \nAugust 22: \n7:30-8 a.m. MORNING COFFEE \n8-10 a.m. | Managing Water\, Weeds and Disease with a Biotic Mindset\nBrendon Rockey\, Rockey Farms \nDrought. It brought a biotic mindset to Rockey Farms\, revealing options once dismissed for growing healthy\, steady yielding potatoes. Today\, the 500-irrigated acre specialty seed potato and quinoa operation has no place for toxic chemicals and synthetic inputs in its living\, profitable and resilient farm system. Cover crops\, livestock grazing and precise mechanical weeding improve the farm’s carbon cycle\, which results in maximized water efficiency and infiltration rates in addition to decreasing and manageable weed populations. Companion Crops and Flowering Strips build upon these fundamentals\, creating habitat that competes with weed populations and provides resources for beneficial insects to thrive\, providing a successful Integrated Pest Management tool when controlling vector viruses. \n10-10:45 a.m. — NETWORKING COFFEE BREAK \n10:45-11:45 a.m. | Regenerative Agriculture on a California Ranch: Live Podcast Interview\nJohn Kempf\, Advancing Eco Agriculture \nVernon Peterson\, Peterson Family Farm and Abundant Harvest Organics \nJoin John Kempf for a live version of the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast featuring Vernon Peterson of Peterson Family Farm and Abundant Harvest Organics. John and his guest will discuss effective approaches to pest and disease challenges as well as soil health in the context of California’s issues with weather and water. Attend to learn how growers are navigating California’s regulatory and labor challenges\, and the economic success of regenerative farming practices. \n11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. | How to Identify and Correct the Cause of the #1 Limiting Factor in Global Agricultural Production\nGlen Rabenberg\, Soil Works  \nWeeds\, disease\, and poor water penetration are symptoms of compacted unhealthy soil. Agricultural has become accustomed to reacting to these symptoms with chemicals\, micro-nutrients\, and tillage. Correcting the cause of soil compaction restarts the soil ecosystem allowing oxygen and water to penetrate the soil profile eliminating the dependency on reacting to symptoms. In his presentation\, Glen Rabenberg will show you how to identify soil compaction\, teach you what causes compaction\, and leave you with a five-step approach to restore soil health and correct the cause. \n1-2 p.m. — LUNCH \n2-3 p.m. | Bio-Based Solutions for Pest Management and Plant Health\nPamela Marrone\, Marrone Bio Innovations \nAs growers seek to increase pest resistance\, regulations on environmental and worker safety become more stringent\, and consumers demand safer\, more sustainable food\, biologicals (biopesticides and biostimulants) are enjoying an increasingly prominent role in crop protection programs. The evolution of biologicals as a more trusted and reliable tool in a grower’s toolbox\, however\, would not have been possible without advances in science\, technology and manufacturing processes that have made biologicals more effective. The majority of growers may have heard the terms “biopesticides” or “biologicals\,” but may be unclear on their modes of action and when and how to use them successfully in integrated pest management and crop production programs. This talk will outline the foundational concepts of the biologicals category\, discuss how and when to use them and illustrate some of the exciting new developments. \n3-4 p.m. |  PANEL: Ask the Experts \nIn this closing session\, we bring the Summit’s lessons all together with the help of our expert speakers and open it up for questions. You won’t want to miss this unique opportunity to capitalize on the tremendous expertise and experience of these agricultural leaders. \n4-5 p.m. — NETWORKING – CLOSING COFFEE & DRINKS \nTo Register\, please click here.
