DESCRIPTION:Paul Verdegaal officially retired on January 1\, 2018\, and since then the Lodi AVA has been without a Viticulture Farm Advisor for four years. \nWe were thrilled on November 29\, 2021\, when UC ANR posted a job announcement for a new Viticulture Advisor based in San Joaquin County. Applications were reviewed and initial interviews were conducted by a search committee in early 2022\, narrowing down the hunt to two top candidates. Gallo have teamed up to offer growers a few exciting mechanization demos for 2022. The mini GUSS (gussag.com/mini-guss/) is a California-made 4WD autonomous air blast sprayer designed for vineyards by GUSS Automation in Kingsburg. A combination of GPS\, LiDAR\, sensors\, and software guide the driverless mini GUSS safely and efficiently through vineyards. A single employee can monitor up to 8 mini GUSS sprayers at a time. It’s truly a spectacle to watch! This month\, we welcome Dr. Mary Wildermuth to teach us about her work on a safe\, novel method to prevent powdery mildew disease in grapevines. Mary’s team creates microscopic blocker codes – which only powdery mildew can read – that tell the DNA of powdery mildew not to produce essential proteins it needs for infection. These blocker codes are made of naturally occurring fungal material and they degrade in the environment\, which makes them safer to use than some other materials.
