SUMMARY:LEAFROLL VIRUS TAILGATE TALK
DESCRIPTION:LEAFROLL VIRUS TAILGATE TALK.\n\nDate: Wednesday\, Oct. 17th\, 2018 \nTime:\n7:30 am – 8:00 am sign-in\, coffee & donuts\n8:00 am – 8:30 am leafroll virus mgmt. strategies\n8:30 am – 9:30 am hands-on virus workshop\n\nVenue: 2400 East Woodson Rd\, Acampo\, CA 95220 (look for grower meeting signs) \nCost: FREE\, all are welcome \nWho Should Attend: Everyone – viruses affect our entire industry! \nDescription: We’ll start off by sharing leafroll virus management strategies we’ve learned from researchers around the world and local experiences. LangeTwins will discuss how they train a virus scouting crew & how they map and manage for leafroll virus.\nThen\, we’ll all head out to the vines with the Lodi Grapevine Virus Research Focus Group to check out virus symptoms on previously-tested vines\, look for beneficial insects\, learn how to properly take virus testing samples\, and look for virus vectors (with Dr. Cindy Preto who can teach us about the presumed red blotch vector – the threecornered alfalfa hopper).  Much like the Mealybug ID Field Day last summer\, we will have microscopes available and it will be fun to see what other insects we find as we search the vines (we’ll also take this opportunity to look for vine mealybugs\, parasitized mealybugs\, and Cryptolaemus beetles). \nThis meeting is partially funded by the American Vineyard Foundation and the CDFA PD/GWSS Board – thank you! \nRSVP by 10/16 (if possible): Please email lwwc@lodiwine.com or call 209.367.4727 and ask for Christina.

SUMMARY:CAPTURING WATER FOR THE FUTURE WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:Date: Monday\, November 5th\, 2018 \nTime: 9:00 am – Noon \nVenue: Woodbridge Winery Old Barrel Warehouse\, 5950 Woodbridge Rd E.\, Acampo\, CA 95220 \nDescription: With increasing demands on groundwater\, and the threat of groundwater pumping restrictions\, capturing and storing water for future use is essential. It is critical to utilize our landscape to increase groundwater recharge\, preferably without taking land out of production to minimize economic losses that would greatly affect our agricultural communities. \nSustainable Conservation has been working with winegrape growers\, researchers and water districts since 2011 to demonstrate and evaluate how farmers can divert surface water affordably and safely onto vineyards to recharge our depleted aquifers. This approach\, coupled with conventional recharge strategies\, can significantly increase groundwater replenishment. By maximizing recharge in wet years\, farmers\, communities\, and the environment will be better prepared for future droughts. \nThe workshop will focus on how farmers\, landowners and water districts can use active and fallow farmland to increase groundwater recharge while avoiding crop health problems\, minimizing nutrient leaching and disruption of annual farm operations. Workshop discussion topics include: \n\nChallenges of Water District’s with Junior Water Rights\nLodi region winegrape grower’s perspectives on groundwater recharge management\nResults of 2017 Costa Vineyard recharge trial\nYield comparisons of Costa Vineyard recharge site\nAdjustments to agronomic and cultural practices to successfully implement recharge on vineyards\nCrop health research on winegrape recharge\nNutrient management practices for on-farm recharge\n\nRefreshments and Workshop @ \nWoodbridge Winery Old Barrel Warehouse\n9:00 am – 11:00 \nField tour following workshop @ Al Costa Zinfandel Vineyard\n11:15 am – Noon \nFor more information\, click HERE. \nRSVP: Please RSVP by October 29th! You may RSVP to Joe Choperena by phone at 209.408.0612 or via e-mail at groundwater@suscon.org
