DESCRIPTION:Date:  Tuesday\, July 1\, 2025 \nTime:  8:00 – 9:30am \nVenue:  Burgundy Hall\, Grape Festival Grounds\, 413 E Lockeford St\, Lodi CA \nCost:  FREE\, all are welcome \nCredits:  1.5 DPR CE (OTHER) approved \nTopic & Speakers: \n\nBiological control of grapevine trunk diseases — Christopher Wallis\, PhD  (Research Plant Pathologist\, USDA)\n\nWho Should Attend:  Local Pest Control Advisers (PCAs)\, growers who manage their own pest control (Private Applicators) or who have pest control questions\, anyone looking for viticulture DPR CE credits\, viticulture technical advisors and winemakers/grower relations personnel interested in learning about vineyard pest management. \nDescription:  Our group meets monthly to discuss current vineyard pests and their management. The goal is to create a strong local network for communicating the best IPM strategies and for support in solving viticulture anomalies. This month\, we will focus on grapevine fungal trunk diseases. One solution to combat these diseases is to employ biological control agents (BCAs). Therefore\, multiple strains of potential BCA Trichoderma sp. were isolated from Californian vineyards and screened for ability to limit pruning wound infections and resultant trunk disease. Eight strains with the most BCA potential belonged to one of six different Trichoderma species: T. asperellum\, T. capillare\, T. harzianum\, T. saturnisporopsis and two putatively new species. These strains were observed to have potentially different mechanisms of combating plant pathogenic fungi\, with some relying more on metabolite production and others on direct predation.
