Transgenic plants on trial

First two sentences in second paragraph: Since the US Department of Agriculture started regulating field trials involved transgenic plants, more than 370 permits in 35 states have been issued (see figure). Genes for a wide variety of agriculturally valuable traits have been inserted over a dozen crops, as listed in the table, and many of the resultant cultivars have performed well enough to send companies back to the USDA seeking deregulation of these of these recombinant genotypes.
