San Joaquin Delta College, a junior/community college headquartered in Stockton, CA, is excited to announce a new Lodi-based viticulture and wine course to be taught at the Lodi Winegrape Commission’s Wine & Visitor Center by Fred Swan.

CUL ART 31: INTRO TO VITICULTURE, WINEMAKING & WINES OF THE WORLD (3.0 UNITS)

Offered Thursday nights from 6:00 – 8:50 pm | January 16 – May 15, 2025

This course surveys the world of viticulture and the wine industry, including the history of viticulture, grapevine anatomy, worldwide grapes, wine production and sensory evaluations. Boost your wine tasting skills with this entertaining, step-by-step course that will guide you through the world’s most important grape varieties and regions. Improve your ability to evaluate and describe wines as lectures are accompanied by relevant tastings. Lecture topics include:

  • History of Wine
  • Intro to Wine Tasting
  • Viticulture – From Soil to Harvest
  • Major Grape Varieties
  • White/Rosé/Red/Sparkling/Fortified Wine Production
  • Viticulture and Wine Styles in France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Greece, Croatia, Georgia & the Levant, California, Oregon, Washington, South Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

This is a fantastic opportunity for growers, vintners, hospitality staff and anyone interested in wine or a wine career to expand their knowledge and perspective of our fascinating industry.

Fred Swan DWSET, CSW is a respected educator, sommelier and wine writer. An associate professor of wine in the Department of Culinary Arts at San Joaquin Delta College, he has taught courses and consumer workshops for more than a decade at many schools, events and festivals. His specialties include the wines, regions and history of California, as well as those of Oregon, Europe, and Australia. He’s sought after for tasting and food-and-wine pairing workshops. His credentials include Diploma of Wine & Spirits, Certified WSET educator, Certified Sommelier, French Wine Scholar, Certified Specialist of Wine, California Wine Appellation Specialist, Italian Wine Professional and more.

Description:  Pinot noir styles vary widely based on the region in which the grapes are grown and who’s making the wine. In time for upcoming food pairings during the holidays, enjoy a culinary journey exploring six Pinot noirs from California, Oregon, France, New Zealand and Australia. You’ll gain an understanding of the Pinot character these regions masterfully create and learn how to better understand what a wine may be like just by reading the label. Plus, you’ll discover new wines to love! Seating is limited.
