Description: Our group meets monthly to discuss current vineyard pests and their management. The goal is to create a strong local network for communicating the best IPM strategies and for support in solving viticulture anomalies. This month, we will focus on grapevine fungal trunk diseases. One solution to combat these diseases is to employ biological control agents (BCAs). Therefore, multiple strains of potential BCA Trichoderma sp. were isolated from Californian vineyards and screened for ability to limit pruning wound infections and resultant trunk disease. Eight strains with the most BCA potential belonged to one of six different Trichoderma species: T. asperellum, T. capillare, T. harzianum, T. saturnisporopsis and two putatively new species. These strains were observed to have potentially different mechanisms of combating plant pathogenic fungi, with some relying more on metabolite production and others on direct predation. Follow-up studies to further develop these into useable products for grower use will be pursued.
