San Joaquin Delta College is now offering wine appreciation courses for the Fall 2023 quarter, with some beginning as early as August 21, 2023. Course information provided by Delta College is below.

How to register: Apply to Delta to receive your username and password. If you have already applied, learn more on how to activate your login for the first time. This login information is required to register for classes. Unit costs for California residents are $46 per unit. Classes are 1.5 to 2 units.

 

CUL ART 32 EVALUATION OF WINE (2.0 UNITS)

Offered Tuesday nights from 6:00 – 8:05 pm | August 22 – December 12

This course is an exploration of the principles of sensory wine evaluation. It is designed to expose students to a broad range of wine varietals and wine styles and to develop wine tasting skills useful at all levels of the wine industry. The course includes tasting wines from many world wine regions and learning basic tasting techniques. Students learn the effect that climate, viticulture techniques, and production techniques have on wines. Students should bring six matching wine glasses to every class session.

CUL ART 85 WINE REGIONS OF CALIFORNIA (2.0 UNITS)

Offered Monday nights from 7:30 – 8:50 pm | August 21 – December 11

This course is a survey of wines of California, including history, viticulture practices, winemaking styles, geography, and sensory evaluation of representative wines from major AVAs. The AVAs will include Sierra Foothills, Napa, Sonoma, Lodi, Mendocino, Monterey, San Luis Obispo/Paso Robles, and Santa Barbara. Students must bring six wine tasting glasses to class each week

CUL ART 86A INTRO TO WINE OF EUROPE (2.0 UNITS)

Offered Thursday nights from 6:00 – 8:05 pm | August 24 – October 12

This is an introductory course to the wines of the old world. It will examine the exciting major wine regions of Italy, France, Spain, and Germany, including the grape varietals, climates, and geography of these regions, and how this shapes the wines produced. This course will explore the importance of the wines produced in these countries as well as their history and culture. Students must bring six wine tasting glasses to each class.

CUL ART 86B INTRO TO NEW WORLD WINES (2.0 UNITS)

Offered Thursday nights from 6:00 – 8:50 pm | October 19 – December 7

This is an introductory course to the wines of the New World. It will examine the major wine producing regions of South America, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and North America (other than California). The grape varietals, climates, and geography of these regions will be examined. This course will explore the importance of the history and culture behind the wines produced in these regions. Students must bring six wine tasting glasses to each class.

CUL ART 87 DTC WINE SALES (2.0 UNITS)

Offered Wednesday nights from 6:00 – 8:50 pm | August 23 – October 11

This course is an introduction to and overview of the sales and marketing of wine directly to consumers. The course will include information on special events, the creation, and management of wine clubs, e-commerce, building connections with customers, and internet marketing. The focus is strictly on the aspects of marketing and selling wine directly to consumers.

CUL ART 88 TASTING ROOM OPERATIONS (2.0 UNITS)

Offered Wednesday nights from 6:00 – 8:50 pm | October 18 – December 6

This course examines wine tasting room customer service and sales. Topics include managing crowds and responsible service, POS system use, inventory control, wine clubs, selling techniques, retail “gift shop” selling, wine vocabulary, out-of-state shipping laws/logistics, and the laws and regulations of serving wine in California.
